Insulam™
C-K's trade name for this material is Insulam™. This unique material combines the dielectric properties and stability of thermosetting phenolic resin with the strength and toughness of wood fibers. The result is essentially wood-reinforced plastic which is a very good dielectric which exhibits excellent mechanical properties.
The manufacturing process begins with select European beech (fagus sylvatica)
After being cut to size each individual piece of veneer is impregnated with phenolic resin in a vacuum autoclave. Following impregnation, the pieces of veneer are baked in an oven to achieve a "B-stage" (partially cured) condition. The next step is to arrange and to stack the veneers to the desired configuration and thickness. Lamination, densification and complete curing are accomplished simultaneously in specially designed presses.
Insulam™ is manufactured in two specific grades Insulam LH™, and Insulam EH™
Insulam EH™ Fully Impregnated densified Laminated Wood
Insulam EH™ is a fully impregnated densified wood product that offers high mechanical strength, high dielectric strength and dimensional stability. It is usually significantly less expensive than NEMA-grade glass laminates - and stiffer than other phenolic laminates. The veneer grain of Insulam EH™ can be arranged to put the greatest strength where it is needed. The product is easily machined and can be used in cryogenic applications. Insulam components are widely used in Electric Power equipment.
Insulam LH™ Non Impregnated Densified Laminated wood. (IEC 61061)
Insulam LH™ is non-impregnated product which is manufactured to comply with DIN 7707, and IEC 61061. This is used primarily for structural electrical components in oil- insulated power transformers. The Major uses of Insulam LH™ are in pressure rings and blocking for power transformers.
Rings are manufactured in 2 densities LH77P72(IEC TYPE T4R), and LH77P60(IEC type T2R)
Machine shop Capacity
The company's main business in Insulam™ is selling finished parts and components in contrast to panels or boards. C-K has a well equipped machine shop, including a 5 axis CNC router, CNC Miills and CNC Lathes. C-K has designed and built many large trussed structures of Insulam™ the Company's capabilities in composite structures are discussed elsewhere on this web site.
